Reading Rockets has put out a great article on Informal Reading Inventories (individually administered diagnostic assessments designed to evaluate a number of different aspects of students' reading performance).
The article explains what the assessments are, how they are analyzed and how they are chosen. A lengthy article, but well worth the read.
